Buddhist sutras : origins, development transmission
Founded in India some twenty-five hundred years ago by the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddhism ranks with Christianity and Islam as one of the three great universal religions. The history of its transmission from India to the countries where it flourished is in essence the story of the transmission of the teachings recorded in its sutras, or scriptures. The present book offers an engrossing account both of the origin and development of those sutras and of the monks who braved perilous journeys and mastered unfamiliar languages in order to carry the sutras to new lands Because of China's significance in the history of Buddhism-as home to the greatest scriptural translators and seminal Buddhist thinkers and the birthplace of most of the extant sects of Mahayana Buddhism-the story of the transmission of the sutras to China is a particularly fascinating and important one. Related here are the hardships and achievements of the early translators of Chinese Buddhist scripture and of the intrepid pilgrims who Journeyed to India to take additional scriptures to China, as well as the in- tellectual ferment that led to the founding of numerous schools of Buddhism and the devotion that led to the compilation of the Chinese canon-by far the largest body of Buddhist scripture today.
