The contemporer Japanese economy
The Contemporary Japanese Economy explains how the Japanese economy grew so spectacularly in the 1960s, how it overcame the difficulties caused by a sharp deceleration in the 1970s, and what prospects face it in the future. Contrary to the widely held view that the Japanese economy is essentially government-directed, the authors emphasize the role of the competitive market mechanism in industrial and financial development. Interactions between social and economic change, centring on the 'middle-class consciousness of Japanese society, are also discussed. The authors apply economic analysis to actual situations, and they make full use of statistical data to support their arguments.
The book makes a comprehensive survey of all the important issues most discussed among both Japanese economists and the general public, and thus takes the reader on a guided tour of this remarkable economic island. This is a largely rewritten and updated version of a book originally published in Japan, where it was widely acclaimed as a major contribution to applied economics. The authors are distinguished Japanese economists and have made numerous contri- butions to the study of the modern Japanese economy.
