Type And Functions Of Women's Language Used By The Characters In The Enola Homless Movie Script

This sociolinguistic-research based aims to analyze and describe the women’s language features and the function of women’s language features found in the Enola Holmes movie script based on Lakoff and Pearson's theory. This research is conducted by using a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is taken from the Enola Holmes movie script by Jack Thorne which is released in 2020. The data of this research are collected from the utterances in the Enola Holmes movie script. The result of this research shows that there are nine out of ten women’s language features used by Enola Holmes and Tewkesbury, as follows, lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. I have found several language functions in the Enola Holmes movie script, they are to express uncertainty, to get a response, to soften an utterance, to start a discussion, to express feelings or opinions, to fill the absence, and to emphasize the utterance. Therefore, women’s language features are not only used by women, but men have also used it for a certain reason. Enola Holmes uses women’s language features to show her insecurities, lack of confidence, and hesitation toward the interlocutor, meanwhile, Tewkesbury uses women’s language features to show his respect and authority to the people in London.
