Deixis Analysis In The Song Lyrics Of The 1975's Being funny In A Foreign Language Album

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the types of deixis present in the lyrics of the band The 1975 in the album 'Being Funny In A Foreign Language'. The analysis of deixis in this thesis is based on the theory of deixis by a scholar named George Yule, which states that deixis can be divided into three types: deictic persona, deictic temporal, and deictic spatial. This research method utilizes qualitative descriptive research. The research object of this thesis is the lyrics of The 1975 songs in the album "Being Funny In A Foreign Language" released in 2022. The research includes all the lyrics in the album that contain deixis. Each identified deixis will be classified into its corresponding type, whether it is deictic persona, temporal, or spatial. After identifying the deixis types in all the songs of this album, the research will determine the dominant and most frequently used deixis by the songwriter, along with the frequency count of each deixis type. The final stage of this research is to explain the importance of using deixis in conveying the intended meaning by the songwriter, and to demonstrate that without deixis, the meaning and context of the songs would be difficult to comprehend.
