The Use of Gottlieb's Subtitling Strategies In The Batman (2022) Movie Script
This research aims to analyze and describe utterances in a movie script using pragmatic theory, particularly subtitling strategies. The research applies a qualitative approach and utilizes a descriptive qualitative method to answer specific questions regarding the data. The object of this research is The Batman (2022) movie script, written by Matt Reeves and Peter Craig. The research data contains several utterances spoken by some characters in the movie script. This research identifies ten subtitling strategies which are stated by Henrik Gottlieb. They are expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, dislocation, condensation, decimation, deletion, and resignation. To determine the subtitling strategies used, the researcher compares the original text and the Indonesian language text. The research shows that there are 62 data which are separated into nine strategies: expansion (6), paraphrase (13), transfer (10), imitation (9), transcription (2), condensation (5), decimation (5), deletion (8), and resignation (4). The results show that subtitler utilizes different subtitling strategies to overcome the problem of translating from one language to another. In addition, the research shows that effective subtitling strategies are necessary to appropriately convey the content and context of the movie.
