Japan has achieved this advanced level of economic wealth very rapidly after a period of expansion in which the world's highest levels of economic growth have been recorded . Not only has Japan recently surpassed the United States in the production of automobiles , it has also in recent years produced more steel than any other non - Communist country with the exception of the United States . Among all countries of the world , Japan ranks third in economic importance after the United States and the Soviet Union . Since economic power is one of the important sources of influence in international affairs , Japan is an impor tant world power .
